Mother, granny held for strangling newborn girl

Kolkata: Sonali Das, the 23-year-old woman who allegedly strangled her newborn girlchild at Halisahar in North 24-Parganas on Saturday, was arrested along with her mother Shefali Sanyal, for being an accomplice in the gruesome murder, on Sunday.
Police had not been able to arrest Sonali on Saturday because no one had filed an FIR. A local resident finally lodged a complaint at the Bijpur police station, giving police legal powers to arrest the accused. Both Sonali and Shefali were produced at Barrackpore sub-divisional judicial magistrate’s court on Sunday. They were remanded to judicial custody till September 16.
Sonali has been accused of murdering her newborn within minutes of giving birth, after realising that the child was a girl. She buried the body in the garden of her house at Halisahar. ‘‘We arrested both Sonali and Shefali after an FIR was lodged by one of the neighbours. A case of murder has been initiated against them,’’ said Barrackpore sub divisional police officer Sugata Sen. Sonali was arrested after she was discharged from Kalyani Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial hospital, where she was admitted on Saturday after suffering from internal bleeding.
Locals said Sonali was tormented because her eldest child, also a girl, is mentally challenged. She was shattered when she gave birth to another girl child. This, they say, could have brought about the violent reaction that ended the life of the newborn.
‘‘Sonali married Tarak, a painter, five years ago. A year later she gave birth to a daughter who was mentally challenged. Sonali was desperate for a boy,” said a neighbour.
